Over 60,000 people to attend wednesday’s meeting. miners announce intention to come to Bucharest
Trade unions’ confederations announced that over 60,000 of their members, miners included (coming from Valea Jiului and Petrosani) will attend a meeting on Wednesday, in Piata Victoriei square of Bucharest - at the Government headquarters. Organisers also expect the population of Bucharest to join the rally and voice its anger against the austerity measures taken by authorities. In Iasi, about 1,000 trade unionists will stage a meeting on Wednesday, and union leaders estimate most protesters will be from the education and health sectors.
Referring to Wednesday’s meeting, PSD secretary general Liviu Dragnea said yesterday there are many chances that he attends the rally himself. According to Mediafax, Dragnea said he will make vehicles available to the people of Teleorman County wishing to come to Bucharest for the meeting. In reply, Dumitru Costin, BNR union leader, reacted to PSD leaders’ intentions and said yesterday unions consider the move as inappropriate. “We do not expect solidarity from parties, these are affecting our efforts. Please leave the unionist actions alone,” Costin said yesterday.
After the rally of May 19, trade unions will decide whether they will resort to a general strike, starting with May 25, or “a street movement similar to that of Greece” - i.e. regularly going out in the street and blocking Piata Victoriei square each day, Cartel Alfa leader Bogdan Hossu announced.
